Interesting findings…

December 1, 2007 – 12:56 pm

A recent (August) study by Assocham has revealed some stunning facts about the boom sectors of the Indian economy. The companies in these boom sectors – retail, civil aviation and financial services are having a hard time retaining staff. More opportunities and lesser number of trained, productive personnel have now caused these sectors to face the same problems as the IT/BPO sector.

The study also brought out some interesting facts – like women are more likely to be loyal in their jobs. For every 10 men who hopped jobs, only two women jumped jobs. And that job hopping is more at the entry and middle levels.

Companies are doing what they can to fill in those jobs and to retain talented professionals. But leaving aside the financial and intellectual capital loss and the opportunity costs of organizations facing attrition, one wonders if this job hopping trend is doing any good. What is propelling such job hopping? Are the big bucks and the fancy frills the only determining factors? Whatever happened to the concept of charting career paths? How is learning and growth to happen if people stick around for just a few months or may be an year?

  2. I only can say that is this employee movement making any hindrance in company progress. Answer of this will be definitely NO. Then Employee will be suffering. Answer again will be NO. Then who is suffering from this? Definitely Customer. Obviously whenever employee makes JUMP he get more salary then his current one and the company who hire give him more salary then the person whose position he is going to fill and to compensate this they look into the customer’s pocket.

I have lots to express but now I am going for sleep so that I can think how deep is our customer’s pocket :)

    KEEP JUMPING!!!!!!!! Good Night

  3. IMHO, thats not correct. In such a situation, everyone suffers - the organization in the short term, job hoppers - in the long term and the customer suffers in terms of quality of service. The costs to the customers have to be kept low or atleast can’t be increased commensurately…the competition assures that. Look at the aviation sector for instance, there is massive price cutting.
But service does take a big beating. I can vouch for that bit based on our recent experiences with a couple of the leading telecom companies here! So as a customer, you don’t get value for your money. Just my two cents…

  4. I don’t fully agree with you on this that in this situation everyone suffers. Basically small level & middle level company suffers not the big organizations. And I feel that these company themselves are responsible for this as they give breaks to fresher and when these fresher learn a little bit, they look for either big companies or MNC. In actual small & middle level companies is nothing more then training schools that pay their students for learning & prepare them for MNC. Why don’t they understand that Moral values have no place now days. I hope everyone had heard the story of a farmer & his 4 sons. Similarly small organization has to be united so that they candidates cannot take their benefit.

  5. Well, perhaps you are right Sanjay. Its difficult for people to come together and take collaborative action, so it might take some time for smaller firms to take any protective stance against the current trend. But I do think that big companies suffer too. Its just that they have deeper pockets and therefore don’t face the music to the same extent.

  6. Both the thing cannot be correct at the same time. If big companies are also suffering but they are not cribbing because they are having deeper pocket. Can you please let me know who is sewing their pockets? Of course customer. Because they charged such high amount from their customers, which makes their pocket deep and then deeper. How big companies can afford to provide better salary to a fresher of a reputed institute as compare to an experienced and more effective person just because he is not attached to any brand name. Even some time they get better position & package over experienced person just because they have a stamp. While I am 200% sure that experienced person will be more productive, even I can prove that. All fresher with big brands are welcome to prove me wrong.
